St Mary’s Community Centre

Building a More Water‑Resilient St Mary’s

Scottish Water and Dundee City Council are working together through the Water Resilient Dundee partnership to deliver new sustainable drainage features at St Mary’s Community Centre. This Scottish Government–funded project aims to help the community manage rainwater more sustainably while reducing the risk of localised flooding.

What’s Being Installed?

Visitors to the community centre will begin to see new features designed to capture, slow, and reuse rainwater, including:

  • A planted raingarden
  • Attractive rainwater planters and improvements to the existing bin store
  • A smart water butt for monitoring, storing and re‑using rainwater
  • New guttering and other above‑ground drainage components

These improvements have been developed in partnership with Dundee City Council’s Property Services team and local community volunteers, who have contributed valuable insight into how the space is used.

Construction of the raingarden is planned to begin in early February and will take around six weeks to complete.

How This Links to the Wider Strathmartine Connections Project

The upgrades at St Mary’s Community Centre are an important early step within the wider Strathmartine Connections programme—an initiative bringing together education, community engagement, and sustainable water management across the area.

Alongside the Community Centre works, the programme includes improvements at nearby primary schools, upgrades to rainwater planters, new outdoor play installations for nurseries, and wetland planting at St Andrew’s Primary School. These activities are part of a coordinated approach to help the local community understand and benefit from sustainable drainage methods before larger interventions begin in the Strathmartine area.

Together, these projects aim to create healthier green spaces, reduce flooding, and support long‑term water resilience for the whole community.
