The Stobswell Forum community group, in a collaborative effort with Sustrans Scotland, Dundee City Council and Scottish Water, designed and installed permanent enhancements on five routes off Albert Street. This project, with the dundee community at its heart, is a testament to the power of collective action in transforming our neighbourhood. The Craigie Street pocket park was one of the five locations.
Craigie Street, previously drained by a conventional combined sewer system, now boasts a more sustainable drainage design. This design, aimed at collecting and slowing down the rainfall-induced runoff before entering the combined sewer system, is a significant step towards a greener community.
The contributing area is around 1000m2, which generates 1m3 (1000l) of runoff for every 1mm of rainfall. The overall storage volume is 90M3 (90,000l), provided in the pocket park’s sub-base. Runoff enters the rain gardens and tree pit before percolating through the soil into the sub-base storage. Flow from the storage is then allowed to enter the combined sewer at a controlled rate.
The system’s hydraulic performance is being monitored. The results will help inform the future design and modelling of these features.
